Why did they kick off at the slightest errant thought at the start (book 1), and then remain dormant during some fairly mission-threatening hijinks during book 2? It might be a small thing, but it spoils a story for me when elements are introduced and then forgotten. And not even reliably - how did she manage to get so close to the Paladin without any further reactions?And those darn tattoos - their effect seemed pretty minimal. It was almost forgotten about in book 2 other than being presented as a simple "allergy" response, rather than a magical effect. There were a couple of other elements that really annoyed me, like what the heck was that rosemary/allergy thing supposed to be? It was completely random, didn't advance the plot and just seemed like a random way to have brought the Paladin on board for the story in book 1. The ending could have been shortened by a good few chapters. And the recrimination element after their wonder engine encounter didn't really tie with the personalities from the first book. I found the romantic element too drawn out, with too much "in their head" descriptions. I really enjoyed the first book of the Clocktuar War, but this sequel I found considerably less entertaining. Plot pace slowed too much and the book dragged on
